It's a really great interview, from what I could read. The main thing I have learned is that my French needs a big tune-up.
But it's cool to know that she spent a year in France when she was 17 and speaks the language (though I believe all except the last line of the interview was conducted in English).
Highlights:
Another confirmation that Caught In The Crowd is the next single (again), because now that the radio is playing her music, she thinks CITC is the best song on the album and deserves another go.
Why is there no studio collaboration with Cyndi Lauper? I don't know, she hasn't asked me! But I am learning Regina Spektor's part in "You Don't Know Me" to sing it with Ben Folds' on tour.
Do you watch Neighbours? No, I don't have a TV!
In her ipod right now: "A lot of Smiths and Morrissey...also TV on the Radio, Bon Iver and some podcasts of This American Life"
To conclude each interview, we ask of the artists to give us their opinion (in some words) of the singers we speak to (?) regularly. You are okay (with this)? Kate responds with comments about Lady Gaga (can't really make this out, exactly...something about admiring a girl at an airport after a long flight? It sounds upbeat, but not as if she's in awe), Pet Shop Boys ("I heard West End Girls the other day, I believe it sounds like Inner City Pressure by Flight of the Conchords"), Britney Spears ("Toxic is a really good song. Sometimes I do it in concert"), Frankmusik ("What he does is super"), Pixie Lott, Kylie Minogue ("I saw she was releasing a song called 'Chiggy Wiggy'. It sounds like a song by the Wiggles"). and Delta Goodrem ("an adorable girl").
Well, duh. Here is the whole thing when run through a good (well pretty good) online translator.
Some of this isn't quite right (there are probably idioms that the translation isn't quite getting, but...it's certainly better than my attempt!)
Kate Miller-Heidke, every success in Australia, and in preparation for a small U.S. tour has agreed to answer a few of our questions. And oh, she is adorable.
Our English-speaking readers will be able to read the English version of the interview in three days.
HM • To begin with, can you introduce yourself briefly to visitors that you do not know yet? (and therefore would not read all the articles we spent thee: shame)
• My name is Kate Kate Miller-Heidke, singer-songwriter originally from Brisbane, Australia. I guess that my music can be considered as an alternative to pop, but more often, I mix styles.
HM • How did you get into music? More or less by chance, or thou dreaming since a little girl singing in front of mirrors in your bedroom?
• Kate's music has never been a choice for me was simply a fact, something inherent, and I feel very fortunate to be able to build a career from it. The music was always the only thing that I was gifted. I sang every day of my life, ever since I was a baby. I took classical training after leaving school, but honestly, my biggest passion has always been writing.
HM • Curiouser is your second album, following Little Eve. Do you feel, yourself, a marked change in sound between the two?
Kate • Yes, Little Eve is a folk album, while more Curiouser explores the joys of pop innovative, say. They are very different albums.
HM • The Last Day on Earth is now a huge success in Australia. How do you perceive?
Kate • It's a bit of time that I saw in London, so I have not really been affected by all this. I feel quite detached - but I'm really grateful, however.
HM • Neighbors And in all sincerity, is a series that you watch?
Kate • No, I have no TV.
HM • With the success of this title, your second album, Curiouser, is found again in the tops of the Australian rankings. Finally, the title of the album is more justified, since with Last Day on Earth, the public seems to become "curiouser." Other singles are planned around it?
Kate • The next single will be "Caught In The Crowd ', which was also the last single, by coincidence. Now that radio stations play my music, I wanted Resort 'Caught In The Crowd' because for me it's the best song on the album, and especially no one had played after its initial release.
HM • The success of the title gives you he wanted to try the European adventure? I think you did a little promotion in the USA for your first album, Little Eve. You expect to return?
• Kate I am about to leave for the United States to be the special guest of the American tour of Ben Folds. We will produce several universities in the Midwest. I'm a big fan of Ben Folds and his audience might be delicious. I'd love to come to Europe, especially France. This is no doubt in my plans for 2010.
HM • You have already spent time in France?
Kate • When I was 17, I spent a year as a student Oyonnax exchange (that is between Lyon and Geneva). I learned to speak French fluently even if it's a bit rusty now, unfortunately! I was the kind of teenager who was sulking at the time, and spent much of the year in my room, writing songs with my guitar. It was a major formative experience for me and my music. I really have a great love for this country, its people, its food and language, and I can not wait to return.
• HM Let's talk a little more to this album. You have worked with Mickey Petralia, who was behind some of Beck's albums: how was your meeting?
Kate • Keir (my collaborator and husband) and I had sent our demos to a bunch of producers. Mickey was the first to remind us. His previous productions were extraordinary. We were big fans of Flight of the Conchords at the time, and was the last project on which Mickey had worked. The rest of his prods - Beck, Eels, Peaches etc ... had all this experimental spirit that we wanted to Curiouser. Mickey is really a genius producer and now a great friend.
HM • And the result of this meeting is this album, especially in diverse styles. What are your influences?
• To Curiouser Kate, our idea was to make pop theater, which is risky. As Cyndi Lauper, Queen, Divinyls, Devo. Originally, my influences are much more folk: listen to Joni Mitchell opened my eyes to a vast world of music when I was 14 years, and I also started to write things with it.
HM • Currently, what would you dream collaborations? Why have not recorded in the studio with Cyndi Lauper, after you live on Girls just want to have fun?
Kate • I do not know, she told me not ask! Right now I'm learning the parts of Regina Spektor on "You Do not Know Me 'to sing with Ben Folds on his tour. It will be difficult to do as well!
HM • If you looked at your mp3 player, what you would find at this moment?
• Kate lot of Smiths and Morrissey. I just got all his old albums, it is all ridiculous to me. There would also be TV on the Radio, Bon Iver, and some podcasts of This American Life.
HM • On-Music Hall, concluding each interview, we ask artists to give us their opinion (briefly) on singers whom we talk regularly. Do you agree?
- Lady GaGa: There is a part of me that admired the gentle girl who tumbled down an airport after flying long-haul while wearing high heels and a coat. It's just crazy. I like the fact that she goes to the end of something.
- Pet Shop Boys: I heard 'West End Girls' the other day - I can not believe how it looks like 'Inner City Pressure' by Flight of the Conchords!
- Britney Spears: Toxic is a great song. Sometimes I scold live.
- Frankmusik: I play the One Movement Festival next month and there is also. From what I heard he does is great.
- Pixie Lott: All I know about her is that she is on posters in London.
- Kylie Minogue: I saw that it would release a song called 'Chiggy Wiggy'. It sounds like a song of Wiggles.
- Delta Goodrem: An adorable girl.
HM • A final word to readers Hall-Music?
• Kate (she responds in French) I hope that soon I'll see you in France!
